Javier Genaro Gutiérrez Pemberthy, President of Ecopetrol S.A., is a Civil Engineer.  He graduated from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá in 1975.  That same year, he completed the courses for a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering at the same University, majoring in Statistics and Operations Research.  In the beginning of 1981, he took a course in Electric System Expansion Planning at the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.  In 1991, he carried out a Specialization in Finances at the Universidad EAFIT in Medellin.  He was born in Bogotá in 1951.  He is married and has two children.

He began his career in 1975 when he began working with Interconexión Eléctrica S.A. E.S.P. – ISA – in the field of Electrical Planning with emphasis on Hydraulic Resources and Expansion Models for the Planning of the Colombian Electric System; he climbed the corporate ladder to the Management of the Planning Office, and in 1992, he took office as the General Manager of ISA until January 2007. Since then, he is President/CEO of Ecopetrol S.A.  He has been a professor of Statistics and Operations Research at the Universidad de los Andes and Operations Research with emphasis on Dynamic Programming at EAFIT.  He has a proficient level of English and understands Portuguese.

In 2002, he received the “Portfolio” award, in the “Best Corporate Leader” category; in 2005, the América Economía Magazine conferred him the “Excellence” award in the category of “Internationalization”, and that same year, “La Republica” newspaper acknowledged him as one of the ten best executives of the year in Colombia.
